Product Updates — August 2026

Every update this month shares one goal: less time chasing documents and second-guessing sources, and more time on what your clients actually pay you for — advice.

Shipped this month

Seven changes reached every firm in August — one new client type, and six ways the platform gets out of your way so the work you hand to clients is cleaner and better supported.

New

Bring your individual clients into the advisory fold

Until now, TaxFigure was built around business entities. As of late July, you can add individual (Form 1040) clients as a first-class client type — with the same review workflows and AI-assisted insight you use for business clients.

Entity Type is now the first field when you create a client, so the form adapts from the start: choose Individual and you'll see person-appropriate fields instead of business-only details like EIN and fiscal year end. If you convert an existing entity to Individual, those business-only fields are cleared automatically.

Individual clients get the full Tax Review treatment, with a dedicated 1040 document checklist built around what an individual return actually needs. Two touches that respect how you already work:

  • No estimated payments? Attest to it. If a client makes no estimated tax payments, you can attest to that and the Estimated Tax Records requirement is waived — no more chasing documents that don't exist.
  • Organizers and interview notes count. Tax organizers and client interview notes now satisfy the workpaper requirement, so the materials you already collect get credit in the readiness checklist.
Improved

Citations you can stand behind

Advice is only as strong as its support. When you take a position with a client — or document one in a file — you need to know exactly where it came from. This month, citations were overhauled end to end:

  • Every number points to the right source. Previously, a citation number in an answer could occasionally mismatch the Sources list. Now the number in the text, the sources panel, and the detail view all reference the same source, every time.
  • Sources are verified before they're cited. Links are checked to be live before they appear in an answer, so far fewer citations lead to a “page not found.”
  • Numbering reads cleanly. Citations run 1, 2, 3 in the order they appear — no more jumps from [8] to [30].

The result: research you can carry into a client conversation or a workpaper with confidence.

Improved

From research to client deliverable in one click

Turning research into something client-ready used to mean cleaning up raw formatting symbols — **bold**, # headings, table pipes — after every paste. Now the Copy button produces clean, formatted text: bold stays bold, headings stay headings, tables come across as tables, and citations convert to tidy superscript footnotes that match what you saw on screen.

Paste straight into an email, memo, or advisory letter and it's presentation-ready. The button now sits directly beneath the response, where you'd expect it.

Fixed

Clearer billing, no surprises mid-engagement

The billing panel now shows your firm's real credit balance and expiration dates, including gifted or promotional credits — which previously could display as duplicates or trigger a false “100% used” warning. If credits are gifted to your firm, a pop-up tells you how many and their use-by date, and the low-balance warning now fires at the right time — so you're never surprised in the middle of client work.

Also fixed: firm admins using two-factor login could briefly see the wrong billing view right after signing in.

Fixed

Document uploads that heal themselves

Your review workflow is only as fast as the documents feeding it. Occasionally an upload would sit in “processing” indefinitely with no way to tell why. That's fixed: stuck documents now retry automatically, and a background check sweeps up anything that still hangs — either finishing it or clearly marking it failed so you know to act. Related polish:

  • The Reprocess button on a failed document now tells you when you're at your document limit, with a clear message to free up a slot — instead of failing silently.
  • Processing errors show an accurate message instead of a misleading “permission denied.”
New

Faster bug reports: just paste a screenshot

Describing a visual glitch in words is nobody's favorite task. The in-app feedback form now accepts up to 5 screenshots — paste from your clipboard (Ctrl/Cmd+V), drag and drop, or click to upload. A picture gets us to the fix faster.

Improved

Also this month

  • Deleting or archiving an entity now works reliably, updates the list immediately, and shows a clear message if something goes wrong.
  • Waivable requirements are tagged and grouped in the Tax Review readiness list, so you can see at a glance what's optional.
  • Clearer error screens when something unexpected happens, and continued security hardening across the app.

What's next

Five things in active development for September. Timing and details may change — see the note at the end of this section.

Documents in, advisory out — a rebuilt upload experience

We've heard the feedback: uploading client documents can feel restrictive, and “required documents” rules don't always match how documents arrive in the real world. Every minute spent fighting a checklist is a minute not spent advising — so the experience is being rebuilt around how you actually work:

  • One PDF, many forms. Clients rarely hand you a neat stack of separate files — they send one PDF with the whole package: W-2s, 1099s, K-1s, all together. TaxFigure will recognize the individual forms inside a combined PDF and give each one credit on your checklist, instead of counting the bundle as a single document.
  • More flexible “required” document rules. Checklists and gates will be less rigid about exactly which document satisfies a requirement, so you get from intake to insight faster.
  • A more unified, intuitive flow with fewer restrictions, and clearer messages when something goes wrong — plain explanations instead of technical errors.
  • A more intuitive Tax Review document gate, so it's always obvious what's needed to start a stage, what's optional, and why.

Corporate structures become an advisory asset

Today, the Structure tab is a capable diagramming canvas — but the boxes you draw are just drawings. Next month, structures graduate from sketch to strategic tool:

  • Drawing a structure can create real entities. Add an entity to your ownership map and it can become an actual client entity on the platform — no double entry.
  • Relationships become visible everywhere. The Entities page will show how your clients relate — parent companies, subsidiaries, ownership groupings — so you see the whole client family, not a flat list.
  • The AI will understand your client's structure. When you ask a planning or research question, the AI will consider the full ownership picture — who owns what, and how the pieces connect — so answers reflect the entity's real complexity, the way a seasoned advisor's would.
  • Export your diagrams. Download a structure as an image or PDF, ready to drop into a planning memo or client presentation — a deliverable, not just a workspace.

Ask a follow-up about any sentence

Shipping very soon: highlight any passage in an AI answer and an “Ask TaxFigure” button appears. Click it and the passage attaches to your chat box as a small context chip — then type your question. If the highlighted text was backed by a citation, that source rides along automatically, so the follow-up answer is grounded in the exact quote and the exact source you were reading, not a guess from the broader conversation.

It's the fastest way to pressure-test a conclusion before you take it to a client.

Fewer errors, all around

A dedicated stability push is underway, focused where it matters most: the main research chat and entity document uploads. The goal is simple — fewer unexpected errors, fewer stuck screens, and clearer recovery when something does go sideways, so the platform stays out of your way during busy client work.

Coming soon

Light mode

For everyone who prefers a bright workspace: a light appearance option is coming across the app — chat, entities, billing, tax review, calendar, and more.

Features listed under “Coming next month” are in active development. Timing and details may change, and purchase of TaxFigure is not dependent on the delivery of any future functionality.

Tell us what to build next

The in-app feedback form — now with screenshots — is the fastest way to reach the team. Every request is read, and most of what shipped this month started as one.
